PPF vs Ceramic Coating: What Each One Actually Stops
How much does ceramic coating cost? About $800 to $2,500 for a professional job, depending on vehicle size and paint condition, according to Autotrader, while clear PPF film costs $350 to $750 a roll before labor. The two stop different things: a coating adds gloss and makes dirt slide off, while PPF is a thick film that takes rock chips.
People often buy one expecting the other, which is how you end up with a $1,500 coating and a chipped hood. Here is what each product actually does, what each one costs, and when it makes sense to have both. If you are new to film, our guide to how much PPF costs covers the film side in detail.
Key facts
- Autotrader puts a professional ceramic coating at about $800 to $1,100 or more for a small vehicle.
- Coating all exterior surfaces starts around $1,350 for a car, $1,550 for an SUV and $1,650 for a truck, per Autotrader.
- Autotrader estimates a DIY ceramic coating at $200 to $400 for the whole exterior.
- J.D. Power notes that stones will still chip your paint under a ceramic coating.
- Wrapteck clear PPF comes in TPU or TPH, 6.5 or 7.5 mil, and costs $350 to $750 per 1.52 m x 15 m roll.
- Our clear PPF blocks 95 to 98% of UV and has a hydrophobic, self-healing top surface.
How much does ceramic coating cost?
These figures come from Autotrader's ceramic coating cost guide, which surveyed detailing shops in several US regions and found similar starting prices.
| Ceramic coating job | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Entry coating, small vehicle, paint only | $800 to $1,100+ |
| All exterior surfaces, car | From about $1,350 |
| All exterior surfaces, SUV | From about $1,550 |
| All exterior surfaces, truck | From about $1,650 |
| Large vehicle or heavy paint correction | $2,500+ |
| DIY, whole exterior | $200 to $400 |
Paint correction is the big swing factor. J.D. Power notes that a coating magnifies imperfections, so the paint gets polished first, and Autotrader adds that dark colors often need more of that work. Autotrader says a full job takes around 15 hours on a well kept car and 20 hours or more with multistep correction.
A coating does not need redoing often. Autotrader notes that a professional coating only needs to be applied every few years, and premium products are rated for seven years or longer.
How much does PPF cost by comparison?
PPF is priced differently because it is a physical film, not a liquid. Our clear rolls run $350 (TPH) to $750 (TPU matte) for a full 1.52 m x 15 m roll, and color PPF starts at $260 for a 3 m cut. A professional full-car install is mostly labor and can reach $8,000, according to Edmunds; the numbers are broken down in our PPF cost guide.
At the top end, a full-car PPF job costs several times a full coating. The reason to pay it is simple: only one of the two stops a stone.

What does ceramic coating actually stop?
A ceramic coating is a silica-based liquid that cures into a hard, slick layer on the paint. According to J.D. Power, it keeps water stains, road grime and bird droppings from reaching the paint, and repels water so dirt has less chance to stick. J.D. Power still advises brush-free washes to avoid swirls and scratches.
What it will not do matters more. J.D. Power is blunt about it: stones will still chip your paint, a stray shopping cart will still dent a fender, and tree sap left to bake can still do damage. A coating is a thin layer of chemistry, not a cushion.
What does PPF actually stop?
PPF is a thick layer of thermoplastic polyurethane bonded over the paint. Our standard clear TPU film is 7.5 mil, and the product page lists what it handles: rock chips, sand, bug splatter, bird droppings, tree sap and light scratches. Minor scratches and swirls fade out with heat from the sun or warm water.
It also blocks 95 to 98% of UV, and the hydrophobic top surface beads water much like a coating does. PPF still has limits: a deep cut through the film, a dent or a big impact will reach the panel.
PPF vs ceramic coating: what each one stops
| Threat | Ceramic coating | PPF (Wrapteck clear TPU) |
|---|---|---|
| Rock chips | No (J.D. Power) | Yes, the main job |
| Light wash scratches and swirls | Can still happen; brush-free washes advised (J.D. Power) | Takes them; minor marks self-heal with heat |
| Bird droppings, bugs, sap | Easier to wash off; baked sap can still harm paint | Do not soak into the film |
| Water beading | Yes, very hydrophobic | Yes, hydrophobic top surface |
| Dents | No | No |
| How long it lasts | Every few years; premium rated 7+ years (Autotrader) | Up to 8 years expected service life (product page) |
| Cost | About $800 to $2,500 at a shop | $350 to $750 per roll; up to $8,000 installed |
Should you get PPF, ceramic coating, or both?
Plenty of owners do both, with the coating on top of the film. Autotrader's managing editor had PPF put on his wife's Mazda CX-30 and added a ceramic coating on top on the manufacturer's advice. Two years later he wrote that the car "still looks fantastic."
- Pick ceramic coating if your car lives in a garage, sees few highway miles, and you mainly want gloss and easy washing.
- Pick PPF if chips are the problem: highway commutes, gravel roads, or a new car you plan to keep.
- Pick both if you want chip protection on the front end and the slick, easy wash feel everywhere.
- Pick color PPF if you also want a new look; our colored PPF guide compares it with vinyl.
If you are still weighing wax and other coatings too, our comparison of waxing, crystal plating and PPF covers the cheaper end.

Frequently asked questions
How much does ceramic coating cost?
Autotrader puts a professional ceramic coating at about $800 to $1,100 or more for a small vehicle. Coating every exterior surface starts around $1,350 for a car, $1,550 for an SUV and $1,650 for a truck, and bigger jobs pass $2,500.
How much does it cost to ceramic coat a car yourself?
Autotrader estimates $200 to $400 in product and materials to coat the whole exterior yourself. The catch is prep: the paint must be clean and corrected first, because the coating locks in whatever is underneath.
Why is ceramic coating so expensive?
Mostly labor and product. Autotrader says a full application on a well kept car takes around 15 hours, or 20 or more with paint correction, and coatings sell in 30 ml or 50 ml bottles for $30 to $150.
Is PPF better than ceramic coating?
For stone chips, yes. J.D. Power notes that stones will still chip paint under a ceramic coating, while PPF is a thick film built to take those hits. For gloss and easy washing, a coating is the cheaper tool, and many owners use both.
Can you ceramic coat a PPF wrap?
Yes. Autotrader's managing editor had ceramic coating added on top of the PPF on his wife's car on the manufacturer's advice. Follow the coating maker's instructions for use on film.
