Carbon Fiber Wrap: Forged, 3D and 5D Explained With Real Installs

A carbon fiber wrap is a vinyl or paint protection film printed or embossed with a carbon pattern, so a hood, roof, mirror or whole car looks like carbon without buying carbon parts. Wrapteck sells three kinds: forged carbon vinyl, 3D twill carbon vinyl and 5D carbon PPF. Rolls start at $120.

The hard part is picking the texture that still looks right up close, and knowing whether you need a look or a look plus protection. Below: each type, real installs, specs and roll prices.

Key facts

  • Every Wrapteck carbon roll is 1.52 m (5 ft) wide. Vinyl comes in 6 m, 18 m and 23 m lengths; the 5D carbon PPF comes in 3 m, 6 m, 9 m and 15 m.
  • Ultra HD 3D Carbon Fiber is the lowest priced carbon film in the range, from $120 for a 6 m roll.
  • Black and Red Forged Carbon Fiber Wrap use a 90 micron PVC face film, a Henkel air-release adhesive and a 75 micron PET liner, from $200.
  • 5D Black Carbon Fiber PPF is a TPU film, 140 microns thick with adhesive, with an expected durability of 8 years listed on its product page. It starts at $280 for 3 m.
  • We carry 7 carbon films: 6 textured carbon vinyls plus the 5D carbon PPF.
  • A full small car typically needs around 18 m of vinyl, and most sedans, coupes and SUVs are safer with 23 m.

What is a carbon fiber wrap?

A carbon fiber wrap copies the look of carbon composite with film. Real forged carbon, for example, is made from small pieces of carbon fiber pressed into shape as the resin sets, a method first shown on the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento concept in 2010. The film version gives you that surface on panels you already own.

There are two families. Carbon vinyl changes the look and comes off later. Carbon PPF is a urethane (TPU) film built to also take stone chips. The "3D" and "5D" labels are texture names, so judge a film by its pattern, finish and material rather than the number.

Forged vs 3D vs 5D carbon: what is the difference?

Forged carbon has no repeating grid. Twill (what most people picture as carbon) is a tidy diagonal weave. The 5D film is a deeper weave on a PPF base. Here is the full range side by side, with the construction summarized from each product page.

Film Pattern Construction (from its product page) Finish or color From
Black Forged Carbon Fiber Wrap Forged, random strands 90 micron PVC, Henkel adhesive, PET liner Gloss or matte $200 (6 m)
Red Forged Carbon Fiber Wrap Forged, red strands Same as black forged Gloss or matte $200 (6 m)
Textured Forged Carbon Vinyl Forged, silver, raised texture Vinyl, raised 3D texture Silver $150 (6 m)
Ultra HD 3D Carbon Fiber Classic twill weave 7 mil film, clear laminate Matte or glossy $120 (6 m)
Black Beehive Carbon Fiber Wrap Honeycomb cells 90 micron PVC, Henkel adhesive, PET liner Matte $190 (6 m)
Gold Carbon Fiber Wrap Twill weave in gold 90 micron PVC, embossed Gloss or matte $200 (6 m)
5D Black Carbon Fiber PPF Deep 5D carbon weave TPU PPF, 140 micron Black $280 (3 m)

All of these films sit in our carbon fiber and textured wrap collection, except the 5D film, which lives with the color paint protection film range.

What does forged carbon wrap look like on a real car?

Forged carbon suits people who want carbon that looks custom rather than factory. The product page puts it simply: the random strand pattern means no two sections of your car look the same, and the strands catch light at different angles in sun.

The honest trade-off: forged is busy. On a full car it is loud, so many buyers start with a hood, roof or trim. The product page lists dry or wet install for both the black and red forged films.

Is 3D carbon fiber wrap the most realistic option?

If you want the classic carbon look, the twill weave is it. Our Ultra HD 3D Carbon Fiber prints a sharp twill pattern under a clear protective laminate on a 7 mil film, in matte or glossy. It is also the cheapest way into carbon, at $120 for 6 m and $250 for an 18 m roll.

The trade-off is depth. A printed weave under laminate reads as carbon from a few feet away, while an embossed film such as the Gold Carbon Fiber Wrap has a texture you can feel. If you want a pattern that is not a weave at all, the Black Beehive Carbon Fiber Wrap uses honeycomb cells in matte black.

What is 5D carbon fiber PPF, and is it worth the extra cost?

5D carbon PPF is for people who want the carbon look and paint protection in one layer. The 5D Black Carbon Fiber PPF is a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film with a carbon texture. Its product page lists it as UV resistant, hydrophobic and impact resistant, 140 microns thick including adhesive, rated from minus 40 to 120°C, with an expected durability of 8 years.

You pay for that protection. A 3 m cut is $280 and a 15 m roll is $990, compared with $120 for 6 m of 3D carbon vinyl. For a hood on a daily driver that sees gravel, the extra cost buys chip resistance. For a show car that lives in a garage, vinyl gives the same look for less. Our vinyl wrap vs PPF guide covers that choice in more depth.

How much carbon fiber wrap do I need, and what does it cost?

Buy by panel, not by guesswork. A 6 m roll covers single panels such as a hood or roof. For a full car, our vinyl wrap size guide puts a full small car at around 18 m, with 23 m the safer order for most sedans, coupes and SUVs. Buying the full length once keeps every panel from the same batch.

Is carbon fiber wrap hard to install?

Textured films take more care than plain gloss. The pattern shows every seam, so plan where panels meet and keep the weave running the same way on both sides. The forged, beehive and gold films list dry or wet install, and the 3D film uses a repositionable pressure-sensitive adhesive so you can lift and realign a panel.

Start on a flat part like a roof or hood, then move to curves. Our step by step guide to how to apply vinyl wrap covers cleaning, squeegee technique and post heating.

Which carbon fiber wrap should you pick?

  • Pick forged carbon if you want a custom, one of a kind texture and you are fine with a busy pattern.
  • Pick 3D twill carbon if you want the classic carbon look at the lowest price, from $120.
  • Pick beehive or gold twill if you want a carbon texture that stands apart from plain black weave.
  • Pick 5D carbon PPF if the panel sees stone chips and you want the look and protection in one film.

Bonus fact: the forged, beehive and gold films share the same 90 micron PVC and Henkel adhesive build, so they handle the same way if you mix them on one car.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wrap a hood in carbon fiber?

Yes. A carbon fiber hood wrap is the most common carbon job, and a 6 m roll covers single panels like a hood or roof. Use vinyl for the look alone, or 5D carbon PPF if the hood takes stone chips.

Is forged carbon wrap the same as real forged carbon?

No. Real forged carbon is a composite made from chopped carbon fiber pressed as the resin sets. Forged carbon wrap is a vinyl film with that random strand pattern, so it changes the look without adding a part.

Do you sell matte carbon fiber wrap?

Yes. Ultra HD 3D Carbon Fiber comes in matte or glossy, the Black and Red Forged films come in gloss or matte, and the Beehive Carbon film is matte black.

Does carbon fiber wrap protect paint?

Carbon vinyl covers the paint but is not built as impact protection. The 5D Black Carbon Fiber PPF is a TPU paint protection film that its product page lists as impact resistant against stone chips and road grit.

How long does carbon fiber wrap last?

The 5D carbon PPF product page lists an expected durability of 8 years. For the carbon vinyls, check each product page, and remember that sun exposure and care change real life span.
